Barrel-Aged beer is the hottest thing to hit beer in ages. So in honor of Oktoberfest, Anthony sits down to talk about the process with one of the newest and most sought after brewmasters to hit the scene: Jesse Friedman of Almanac Brewery.

Read More:
How Beer Works
"Fermentation is the process by which yeast converts the glucose in the wort to ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide gas -- giving the beer both its alcohol content and its carbonation."

Yeast Fermentation
"Humans have taken advantage of the metabolism in a tiny fungus called yeast to create beer and wine from grains and fruits. What are the biological mechanisms behind this alcohol production?"

Beer styles:
"Beer style is a term used to differentiate and categorize beers by factors such as colour, flavour, strength, ingredients, production method, recipe, history, or origin."

Difference Between Ale Vs. Lager
"For the average beer drinker, the difference between an ale and a lager comes down to how the beer looks, smells, and tastes. Ales tend to be fruity-estery, while lagers are clean-tasting and frequently described as 'crisp.'"

Almanac Beer
"Our artisanal ales are brewed in collaboration with select Northern California sustainable farms. Each limited release is a unique beer to be enjoyed with friends and savored around the seasonal table."

How & Why to Age Beer:
"For those of us marshmallow watchers, who practice the art of delayed gratification, aging beers at home is a delicious way to expand the cellar. Because, like so many wines, certain beers improve over time."

One of the most informative episode ever! Shame that this has to be crammed into 5 minutes. This guy deserves an hour or two documentary.

There is indeed a gorgeous ammount of labels. and many diffrent kinds of beer to each of them, you got 10°, 12°, Lager, wheat beer, unpasteurized, black beer, light draft of course, and those are the very basics kinds.

I've been to a brewery and not all Belgian beer is still made the same way.
For some kinds of beer we also use barrel aging but indeed I've seen a brewery with a gigantic bath filled with beer in a high tower, it stays there for a week, then it gets emptied, cleaned and its time for next load of beer.

I enjoy hearing about the processes that go into all alcoholic products despite that fact I don't drink any alcohol.

Buddy mentions a "17th century beer purity law." The beer purity law was from 1516. I'm pretty sure that was the 16th century, not the 17th.

It was mentioned first in that video with trace a few weeks ago where it was much louder, I think they lowered it since then. It's still there and I agree, cut your losses on the rights to the music and pick a new track.

I feel strongly that America is the best place for beer in the world. We have very skilled artisans for those traditional styles, but we also have experimental artisans like those at Almanac and 100s of other breweries that love to tinker and try new things. From fruits and flowers, to exotic spices, to rare wooden barrels: the combinations are crazy, and we're trying it all at American craft breweries, with spectacular results.

I mean, what good has a "purity" law ever gotten us?! ;)

I'm a huge fan of almost any Bourbon Barrel aged beer, especially stouts. Blue Mountain Barrel House beer is delicious.
