In 2019 my brother bought a 3 bedroom house in the US with a finished basement and a large yard for the equivalent price of my 2 bed UK flat bought in the same year! Super depressing.

Successive governments failed to stop the buy to let market, low interest rates led to people building property portfolios worth millions. The end is that the young and poor have been priced out of the property market.

Yeah well, I would expect limited housing stock. Compared to the US, the UK is small island nation, and most of the population growth hit peak saturation in the 80s. Also, Europeans generally tend preserve/maintain their housing structures - unlike the US, where old neighborhoods are often bulldozed for newer more expensive developments - You know-Capitalism.

Housing is hella cheap if you are in the North, but in the south of England gets to stupid prices

The US is just as bad, and that’s even in rural areas. The housing crisis continues to get worse year after year.
