INSIDE OUT 2 Got Two Emotions WRONG... #shorts

Inside Out 2 introduces two new emotions, Envy and Ennui, who don't exactly match their names but still fit well into Riley's emotional landscape. Envy, despite her name, embodies admiration rather than resentment, particularly towards popular hockey player Val Ortiz. Ennui, representing boredom, spends most of her time lounging and operating the console through her phone. However, she exhibits more sarcasm than boredom when controlling Riley. Despite these discrepancies, both emotions still fit well within the movie's narrative. As Riley navigates puberty, she experiences complex emotions, often intertwined. Envy and Ennui's interactions with Anxiety show different aspects of Riley's struggle, with Anxiety driving her forward despite Envy and Ennui's influence potentially leading her to isolate herself. Despite their names not perfectly matching their roles, Envy and Ennui add depth to Inside Out 2's portrayal of Riley's emotional journey through puberty.

Well, when you’re bored, you’re often sarcastic because your patience level is really small

Envy is more than just resent, and you can be jealous through admiration

Envy is supposed to represent “wanting something you don’t have, but somebody else does”, and it doesn’t necessarily have to translate into resentment.

Envy isn’t always negative. It’s also in a form of admiration since you want to be the person or better than the person you envy.

Well the emotional depth works 2 ways. Similar to how sadness creates empathy, ennui creates calm and detatchment or hiding her emotions and envy shoes both admiration and resentment.. and anxiety shows worry but also caution, while embarassment shows self protection and withdrawal... emotions can branch off to different interactions

Disgust on that point acts more like pride than anything else

I was thinking of how each emotion could function both positively and negatively - Envy can be aspiration, but also be jealousy, whilst Ennui can be discretion, but also apathy. I mean, there's a scene where Envy and Anxiety argue over how Riley should move her arms whilst she walks, and Ennui just ends it by saying "We've got pockets". And in that moment, Ennui shows the positive aspect of herself - being able to silence a discussion when it's not worth having and taking the approach least likely to aggravate.

Who’s gonna tell him envy doesn’t actually have anything to do with resentment? You can have envy & be resentful but they’re mutually exclusive.

All emotions have a good and bad side. We do see envy display resentment once or twice in the film and we see the bad of ennui’s sarcasm and the good of mellowing her out in social situations that normally excite Riley.

I think this was done as the first movie was all about how every emotion is necessary to us as humans, it would be redundant to show how envy and boredom could be bad when the main focus is on anxiety given its unique nature, envy and unnui would just be sadness and joy again

The way I interpreted it is that all emotions have a good and bad side, and it’s up to them to figure out what their good and bad side is.

Joy‘s bad side is avoidance or selfishness, she can make Riley ignore important things or lots focus on things that really matter, and Riley can’t see things in another way.

Anger, Fear and Disgust bad side is being perceived as negative, but their good side is to protect Riley or defend herself from threats be them emotional or physical. I believe embarrassment falls here too as he can limit Riley’s actions.

Envy’s good side is admiration and ambition, and her bad side is greed.

Anxiety as we saw in the ending of movie 2 also has a good side and that is to help Riley prepare for future important events that she CAN control. (While the bad side is worrying of things she can’t control).

Now Ennui was a really tricky one for me, she didn’t really exhibit a good side through the movie, all she did was help Riley to pretend through sarcasm, but if you try to analyze it from a different perspective we could say Ennui helps Riley relax and less tense to deal with situations, as we saw when she was talking with the older girls, Ennui took over Anxiety and helped Riley relax to interact without having to create lots of excuses or lie.

If we could separate them through roles I’d do

Joy & Ennui are mood controllers
Anger, Disgust and Fear provide protection
Sadness and Embarrassment are behavior/physiological limiters and bring reflection (and I say this because sadness was what stopped Riley from running away in the first movie and stealing the coach’s book in the second)

Anxiety and Envy control Riley’s ambitions

I feel like a film where Ennui is the main antagonist would be very depressing. Like total apathy toward life.

I think it's the idea that one emotion changes based on the consequence of their nature. When you're new to the sense of envy, you either admire something long enough for it to become an "obsession" for something you don't have or not. For ennui, sarcasm is pretty much driven by extensive amounts of boredom, like as in you can't be entertained by regular conversation that you feel more entertained when trying to trigger a reaction from others.

The more bored you are, the more tempted you become to do something that seems simple such as mockery, sarcasm, etc.

Envy can turn into resentment, Riley is still young and all the things she wants are trendy and easy to obtain, once she starts wanting more will envy start being bad. It’s like how nostalgia can be good but also bad, it depends on mental health really

I was a little shocked when Envy spoke up about Anxiety putting too much pressure on Riley in the end scene, I would’ve expected her to just stand back and watch.

Enui also represents not only boredom or sarcasm but also calm
