On the Awakening

On the Awakening is my first own song that's been published on the Internet. I made it very quickly in April, 2012. I sat down, improvised the song and then recorded the instruments. I guess it took about a week or two and the song was ready.

I had been doing videos of me playing cover songs for YouTube during the spring so it felt logical to shoot a video for On the Awakening, too. Instead of just playing the song in my home studio, I decided to take the camera out in the nature. I divided the song into sections and imagined a visual environment for each section in my head. I wandered all around and picked four or five places and then shot the video.

My favourite part of the video is the "desert" scene. With a little help of modern technology, I had the ability to perform a duet with myself. As a fan of progressive rock, that part is also pleasant for me musically because of the guitar and keyboard solos.

The song was originally titled "Saevitiam Natura" (thank you, Google Translate :) ) but the name was a bit too dark for the sunny spring days, so I decided to change it to a more positive one. Nevertheless, it's true that the song starts lightly with D major and ends heavily with B minor. In the end, life goes around and around, and all has to die in order to be born again.
