Have you ever seen such tasty sunburst, slope shoulder dreadnoughts?

I'm a proud owner of two slope shoulder dreadnoughts and let me tell you, they're a real treasure in any guitarist's collection. These guitars are known for their deep, rich sounds, creating a broad audio landscape that contrasts sharply with the laser-focused sound of their square shoulder counterparts.

The first star of today's show is the Santa Cruz Vintage Southerner. This guitar is a true jack of all trades. Its high-quality woods, precise craftsmanship, and the unmistakable Santa Cruz touch all blend together to produce a sound that's as rich and full as you can get. It's great for instrumentals and recording, filling the room with balanced, vibrant tones. With its responsive top and comfortable playability, it's no wonder the Vintage Southerner has earned its place in my collection.

Next up, we have the Atkin J43. If you thought the Santa Cruz was versatile, wait until you get a load of this one. The Atkin J43 is a powerhouse of versatility, making it an excellent choice for both fingerpicking and flatpicking styles. Its balanced tone, robust volume, and the warmth it brings to the table make it a standout choice for any recording or instrumental performance. The craftsmanship is, of course, top-notch, as we've all come to expect from Atkin guitars.

So, stick around as we delve into the nuanced world of slope shoulder dreadnoughts. Whether you're a seasoned player or a beginner, there's something to learn and appreciate about these amazing instruments.

The Atkin J-43 produces the most authentic vintage Gibson slop shouldered tone to my ears.

I recently purchased a Taylor 717. It's very similar to your Santa Cruz in tone. It doesn't give that famous dreadnought woof. And it was oddly familiar to play. Like having a guitar that I played a lot 20 years ago placed in my lap. Kind of like going home after being gone for an extended period. If that makes any sense at all...

I have loved SCGC guitars for many years and will need to find a Southern Artist..I love it but was also a bit blown away by the sound of the Atkins slope shoulder guitar..Actually think the sound of the Atkins is rounder and warmer..sounds fantastic and I love your singing..keep it up my friend

My guitar journey is like Forrest Gump's cross-country run. I've been playing for 30+ years with no particular destination in mind.

TAC Day 111
I'm still here, still playing and learning everyday and it's starting to get a interesting. I'm still no Roy Clarke but I can play a little now. I've been watching bluegrass jam videos and strumming along just trying to keep in time. It's fun and has helped me improve my strumming significantly. A lot of boom chick going on. lol. I've been spending time fingerpicking when I'm able to sit for a while but can't really concentrate on it. I have lots of small wins and a few big one.
I'm still having fun and hope you are too!

Thanks, Tony!
I think the Atkin caught my ear over the Santa Cruz, but it was close. I can see why it's your go-to.
Now I'm looking at sloped-shoulder acoustics... 😀

Happy Tuesday

The Atkin sounded great - and I'm always happy to hear about a builder that I hadn't known about before. But, that Santa Cruz - wow, what a sound! I have yet to hear a SC that sounds less than amazing.

Another entertaining Acoustic Tuesday. I have always has a soft spot for slope shoulder guitars and last year my wife bought me a J-45 for my 70th birthday, yeah I know she is awesome. Acquiring the J-45 totally changed my playing and practice routine, since I got it I don't think I have missed more than a handful of days. As for which one of yours is my favorite I really can't choose they were both brilliant examples of the slope shoulder family. Since I got my J-45 I have been also looking for something in the rosewood family and wouldn't you know it a little shop near me just so happened to start offering Furch guitars. Being the guitar geek that I am I had to swing by one afternoon to check them out and wouldn't you know it the Vintage 2 OM-SR made its way to my truck. It has been the perfect companion for my J-45 it plays like a dream and has the most wonderful tone. As a result my playing time has almost doubled it seems like I always have to play both of them every time I sit down to play, Win-Win :)

The Atkin, yeah. That's the one. Making me want one badly. That Santa Cruz sounded great too, but the Atkin had something special..

Oh man. I WAS in Bozeman and would have loved to join you at Nordic. If only I had known. I was in town to pick up a J 45 from Music Villa and it is now my favorite slope shoulder dreadnought. Thanks so much for Acoustic Tuesday. I do love those beautiful guitars and you make them all sound amazing. Enjoy Life!

I was thinking of going with an Atkin Forty-Three, but bought a Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1942 Banner J-45. But I'm not left out because I have a Custom Atkin Thirty Six. Alister Atkin and his team are outstanding luthiers. I can only recommend this wonderful company.

Greetings from San Diego. You mention that the j-43 sounds great plugged in. What pickup/configuration did you use?
