Historic Lansing Iowa Scenic Great River Road Drive Ride along as I travel the Minnesota and Iowas side of the Great Mississippi River Road, Foggy weather at the start of the trip as I wind southbound towards the Iowa State Line. I found the historic Iron Metal Boundry marker established in 1849. I end up in the scenic river town of Landing. I walk the streets and check out the old building with a close look at the River and an old bridge Sit back and enjoy this epic and scenic journey

Lansing has a great park (Mount Hosmer) with some of the best views of the Mississippi from the bluffs above town. WW1 and other Veterans Memorial there too. You also drove past the Driftless Area Education/visitors center on the south edge of town.

My parents were born and raised in Iowa then moved to Texas right after WW2. In the fifties and most of the sixties we'd spend the summer there visiting our relatives. Spent a lot of time in Clinton, Keokuk and Ft. Madison. Also spent a lot of time in Nauvoo, Illinois when the Nuns were still there and a very long time before the Mormons returned driving up the property taxes. Still have a few relatives left in Iowa and go back every few years.

The button factories were all along the river you can see shells along the river with button holes in them. Remember Thompson Ill Lock and Dam on Illinois side with in 20 feet of Barges going through the Lock.

I went across that bridge in Lansing many times as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. It was very narrow and scary. It doesn’t have any pavement, just a steel deck

They are building a new bridge in Lansing across the river... that one is quite old, narrow and in need of replacement. Another cool stop in Lansing is the Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center--just south of town.
