Portuguese woman here who never dated a portuguese man.
Maybe Portuguese women aren't into hook-up culture and if they were they would rather be with a foreigner who won't 'judge them' since their not of their social circle.

What this guy is reading into 'intent' is thag portuguese women might be interested in a foreign man but not in a hook-up or short term fling (since foreigners are usually here in the short term) as for the men they don't mind hook-ups and short term flings with these foreign women who are also in the country for the short-term and won't be 'judged' since they're far away from their home country.

Side note: Majority of European guys residing in Portugal are not exactly a 'catch' or 'boyfriend/marriage material' and others are migrants from developing countries with very different cultures that dont match portuguese and/or western values in general.

“Village Mentality” is kind of rough. Someone wait until they’re married. Others may have their period. A few were molested or raped. And lots, just have self-control. I wouldn’t put them all in one category.

This must be a whole iberian thing because I heard Spanish women do the same, make the men work to get their attention. I was taught to make men wait at least a certain period of time before engaging in any physical acts. I just want to add I am Latina so its also partly a catholic thing too.

Seems the guy lives in a different Portugal. Most men are very shy, dependent and expect the woman in their life to take of all household work. Can't tell where his perspective derives from.

This is quite an interesting perspective. Some Portuguese men do have this mentality that Portuguese women play the "hard to get" game. However, those same men are the first to point the finger at a Portuguese woman that accepts to go on a date right away. They have double standards. Off course that generalizations are always dangerous but this is my perception. My female friends and colleagues from Portugal are in relationships with Italian men, Germans and English.

I have a Portuguese friend who went on some dates with an American guy (I'm also American). She told him she didn't wanna keep dating and just wanted to stay friends. Then she got soooo pissed when he went on a date with someone else. They ended up getting together after that, and I was just as confused as he was when he told me haha

Women in Germany, Scandinavia, and America are free to ask men for dates. Men sometimes like that as it takes the fear and pressure off of them.

Being married to a Portuguese woman, and not being Portuguese, the biggest challenge is everything is always about Portugal. Sometimes I just want us to be human beings. But it’s always Portugal vs Italy. It’s always a battle over what traditions we uphold, what food the kids eat, what football team they should support. And it’s always implied that if the mother is Portuguese, then the children are Portuguese. There are bigger problems in marriages, but I get exhausted.

Madrid is 5 times more than Lisbon and people are still open. It has nothing to do with the size of the city but with the culture of the city.
