I heard Richard Gere once say that they didn't really need him in this movie, they just needed his hair and his suit. Bless him for the modesty, he couldn't have been more wrong.

There is also an interview with Hector Elizondo somewhere, where he talks about encountering Julia Robert's smile for the first time and thinking 'oh yeah, this girl's gonna be huge.'

The truth I was aware of is how even though Julia was recognised for her role in Steel Magnolias, she was not first choice and Disney who bought the rights to the original script which other actresses were attached they did not want Julia Roberts. Marshall wanted Julia and the they set about to get Gere.
