Large hadron collider upgrade 'revolutionary' - BBC News

The large hadron collider, the world's most advanced particle accelerator, has undergone a major revamp which scientists say could spark a physics revolution.

The vast machine, deep underground in the Swiss Alps, smashes atoms together to break them apart and discover what is inside them.

Since the upgrade, its instruments are more sensitive, allowing researchers to study the collision of particles from the inside of atoms in higher definition.

It means there's now the best chance ever of the machine finding subatomic particles that are completely new to science.

The hope is that it will make discoveries that will spark the biggest revolution in physics in a hundred years.

The BBC's science correspondent Pallab Ghosh reports.

I remember as a kid when this thing was first constructed, the news focused on the possibility of it creating a black hole (which was almost immeasurably overstated) and it terrified me. In the years since I've come to marvel at what it's capable of, probably one of humanity's finest engineering achievements ever. Glad it's gotten an upgrade, keenly looking forward to what they'll find.

The reporter is wearing his mask upside down....imagine how impressed he is seeing all the different colours and shapes that make up the collider.

This reporter wearing his mask upside down and improperly while standing next to one of the greatest scientific & engineering projects ever devised is a great metaphor for the modern world.

People who design and build things like these are incredible.

I’m very impressed with the design of the detectors & the data links & the compute cluster behind it all.

Make them stop. They don’t know what they’re messing with

Back in the day and before kids I worked at TRIUMF (cyclotron particle accelerator in Vancouver, Canada) which contributed to Atlas and made many friends there - some of which continued work at CERN LHC. Twenty some years later my kids are grown and I had the opportunity to tour CERN a few years ago with them to share this amazing machine and the importance of science and new discovery. Pride for humanity and thrilled there are countries and folks that choose to explore, challenge our understanding and expand our knowledge. Thank you :)

"Since Einstein's theories, more than a hundred years ago"
I would say ONLY a hundred years ago. What has happened on this planet in just a century is absolutely incredible.

There might be an economical turmoil but there is no doubt that this is still the best time to invest.

Scientists really brighten the mood these days with their fascinating work: LHC, mars exploration, JWST...
Despite our setbacks, humanity is still fighting for progress and knowledge

Imagine being the company that got the contract to build that thing... looking at the blueprints like "fuck, what have i got myself into" 😂

0:12 "... the upgraded machine, which is massive..." Well yeah it's not called the small hadron collider is it?

I could tell he wanted to say “as big as the discovery of gravity.” But he was stuck on saying it was going to be a bigger discovery then X, which is why he went with the Higgs after that really long pause after saying it’s bigger, it’s it’s it’s bigger… it’s… bigger then the Higgs. Finding a fifth fundamental force… That literally would be as big as the discovery of gravity. It could finally piece everything together. You know, the answer to everything type deal. It could lead to artificial gravity plating like in Star Trek or faster than light speed travel… Like in Star Trek, it could lead to a discovery of things no one has even fathomed before. I’m really excited. These are truly exciting times. And not just with the upgrades to the collider but also we’re waiting for the data to come back from the new James Webb telescope. That telescope theoretically has the ability to see the illumination from a cigarette lighter on the surface of a planet in another galaxy. Which could eventually lead to the discovery of life on other worlds. Truly truly exciting times were living in. At least scientifically speaking…

Things like the Hadron collider remind you of the amazing feats that humans can accomplish.

What an amazing feat of engineering, just ponder what humanity could achieve if it stopped the endless warring.

Why isn’t anyone talking about the possibility of something heinous happening? Or have all the negative comments been filtered out?
