My favorite encounter was when I grav jumped to a system and I was met with 4 spacers. I started shooting at one and nearly destroyed him when they started complimenting my ship and 3 of them flew off and one stayed saying "The Mantis? What's that? Oh hell no!" And he left. I highly recommend grabbing The Mantis when you get the mission for it.
