A big thanks to the generosity of Filipino guitar virtuoso Ric Ickard for sharing his guitar arrangement of this wonderful Filipino folk song. Ric plays this on a 7-string guitar (I hope one day I can own one too because it makes sense to have that extra open bass string), but he took the time to arrange this for the standard 6-string guitar. It’s a VERY DIFFICULT arrangement to play and it took me all week to get it to this level of playing. I am just happy to be able to play it and the journey I went through to learn it is indispensable. I really learned a lot 😊😊👍

The music was composed by Antonio Maiquez and the lyrics were written by Mang Levi Celerio. The song was popularized by Pilita Corrales. There are alternative lyrics and versions out there (even one from Basil Valdez), but I assume Pilita's version came out first and is the authoritative version. Being a Tagalog myself, I thought the title is grammatically incorrect and have a hard time understanding what it means and why it was written that way. Reading the lyrics gave me a better understanding of the message and appreciation for the entire song.

Antonio Maiquez (active 1942-1967) received a degree in preparatory medicine before embarking on a multi-awarded career as a composer for the movies. His parents, both musicians, were his first music teachers. He was a bandleader for an ocean liner before working for the movie industry as a musical director.
