Invasion of Western Europe (ALL PARTS) - Hungarian Conquest 899 - 955

The Magyars have always fascinated me, especially after their settlement of the Carpathian basin post 895 to 905. Their raids over the next 55 years reached as far as the Pyrenees and were successful enough that the Byzantine Empire and several other kingdoms chose to pay off the Magyars to gain relief from invasion. Their raids were finally brought to an end in 955 at the Battle of Augsburg when King Otto I of Germany defeated the Magyars.

One of the very few big History/Warfare channels that hasn't deviated from its beginnings in my opinion. Well done King, never change!

Leaving my comment as a sacrifice for the algorithm but I didn’t expect the full series be uploaded. Thank you.

After Augsburg, the Germans gave up their plans to expel the Hungarians. It took a hundred years for them to attack Hungary again. The end was a resounding failure... István, the first Hungarian king, married a Bavarian princess, and the peace was sealed with a dynastic marriage. Christianity, which was already known to the nomadic Hungarians, became the state religion. Hungarian combat tactics continued to live and develop for centuries. the Hungarian hussar was a legendary warrior. Thanks for the informative video and the correct narration!😊

I never knew how pivotal the Magyar raids were in shaping medieval Europe! The alliance with Arnulf and the devastating battles are so well explained here.

THANK YOU for covering this subject. Especially in the English speaking world where it is unknown, the Hungarian invasions were probably the biggest issue for continental Europe. Much more than the vikings. Finally someone covers them in depth!

It was also Hungarian battles around Vienna in 862 and 881. Between 899 and 970, according to contemporary sources, the researchers count 47 (38 to West and 9 to East) raids in different parts of Europe. From these Hungarian campaigns only 8 were unsuccessful and the others ended with success. 3 reasons of the campaigns: 1 most of the time Hungarians were hired by western powers each other, and they allied always with the weaker party (of course the booty was the payment as everywhere by everybody in medieval times), 2 prevent the German unification after the Battle of Pressburg 907 when Germans invaded Hungary, 3 claim back the Avar treasures which was taken by the Franks. At Lechfeld (sources mention betrayal, as Grand Prince Taksony wanted remove his rivals) a small Hungarian army was defeated deep in German land, and Germans did not dare to attack Hungary since 907, the next German attack was only in 1030 and in 1051 with German defeats.

This was an incredible series y'all made. Not sure why but I've always loved playing as the Hungarians/Magyars in CK2 and CK3 so this was fun to learn so much about them

I love to dive into the thrilling saga of the early hungarians. This video brilliantly captures the fierce determination and strategic brilliance of the Magyars as they carve out a new destiny in Europe.

The Holy Roman Empire may have standed for more than 800 years, but Hungary still stands today. :)
BTW, the defeat at Lechfeld did not end the Hungarian raids, just diverted those to South-Europe. There the raids still continued for another 40 or so years, before the Hungarians finally settled and converted to Christianity.
