The Dire Wolf In Context Of The Evolution and Diversity of Canidae.

Who was the Dire wolf?

Early this year a genetic analysis of ancient DNA of the North American prehistoric wolf - dire wolf, concluded that it was not at all related to the modern gray wolf as previously assumed.

In this video I cover the diversity and evolution of the dogs and attempt to contextualise the Dire wolf. If it wasn't related to the modern grey wolf, were does he stand amongst the Canidae?

Was the Dire wolf a South American maned wolf, a giant fox, a jackal or something all together different?

Thank you and Enjoy.

Sergei Merjeevski.

Your biogeography maps and phylogenetic tree chart were extensive but impeccable visuals for canid evolution+dispersal trends. Hyped for this video Sergei, keep em coming! 💯

I thought the article suggests it evolved in North America or did I miss a related study?

The dire wolf is more like an american jackal than a giant american wolf. Just like that american lions were used to be naegele's giant jaguar at 1st and they confirmend to be a lion and made the american lion more popular than the name of naegele's giant jaguar.

Cool part is dire wolf wasn’t a wolf it was actually it’s own species
