Panasonic Lumix GH5 | Hands-on Preview

Matt G gets hands-on with the brand-new Panasonic Lumix GH5. The GH5 sits at the top of the G-series line, building upon the success of the popular GH4. It uses a new 20MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, and eschews an optical low-pass filter in favour of gathering more detail.

The GH5 also uses a new Venus processing engine. It shoots 4K UHD (3840 x 2160p) and 4K DCI (4096 x 2160p), and offers 6K and 4K Photo options at 30 fps and 60 fps respectively to ensure you never miss a moment. It also boasts a weather-resistant magnesium-alloy construction and a redesigned handgrip.

Interesting - I hadn't seen the bluetooth low energy feature mentioned elsewhere. Assume this is similar to that on the Nikon D500? This just gets better... It's expensive of course but for my money justifies its price more than the even pricier EM1II. I really want to see how the two compare in tracking mode which seems to be the real headline feature of the Olympus. In terms of fps, the Panny while not as fast, is surely fast enough. While I like my EM1, I think the ergonomics on the equivalent Panasonics [I have a GH3] trounce it. Unless the EM1 mk2 soundly thrashes the GH5 on tracking, I can think of very little that would tempt me in Olympus' direction now that the GH5 has 5 axis IBIS. The uprated VF/LCD and the focus selector toggle also weigh quite heavily in the latters favour.

I need to see a proper shootout!
