How do you capture the heart of the wilderness?

When I first met renowned Adirondack photographer Carl Heilman II, I was impressed by his humility and kindness as well as his willingness to share his immense knowledge with anyone who asked. I was struck by the connection he seemed to have with the ancient peaks and beautiful landscapes that make up the Adirondack Park. In 2015, Carl set out to capture a portrait of the wilderness—hiking up the ridgeline of Giant Mt. over and over again to capture the changing seasons, weather and light of the Adirondacks across an entire year. Early in the year, I joined him on some of those hikes to try to understand what keeps him coming back to these mountains, even after living and hiking in them for 40 years.
