Having my puppy insured saved us >$11K when she needed surgery for a obstructed bowel at 9 months, and then two follow up surgeries to fix adhesions at 3 and 4 years. If we had waited, we wouldn’t have gotten covered for what would have then been a “pre-existing condition.” Always get the pet insurance…it’s worth it!

Just get the insurance. As someone whose beautiful, healthy 3 year old dog was just diagnosed with liver cancer, there’s no way to predict when you’ll need the insurance. Initial diagnostics $1400. Medications (so far) $200. Biopsy $4000. Surgery will be $5000-$7000. Chemo will be $1000-$2000. We had a savings account for our pup, but we weren’t prepared for this.

My dog is 13 years old and oddly healthy(super grateful for that) and I am wondering if I should get pet insurance and what calculations you, Katie, would perform to see the cost benefit and what situation would it make the most sense. Thank you!

This advice assumes that a small puppy dont for example swallows something.. also if you have a bigger amount of money in your buffert instead what are you missing out on investing that. Also a young dog that gets sick have more years to loose.
