Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago. There was a lot of volcanic activity which meant the Earth was very hot, above 100 degrees Celsius. The volcanic activity released large amounts of carbon dioxide, water vapour and then small amounts of methane, nitrogen and ammonia. There was no oxygen. Scientists study rocky planets with lots of volcanic activity, such as Venus and Mars, showing they have lots of carbon dioxide and water vapour in their atmospheres too. They use this as evidence to conclude Earth's early atmosphere must have been like this as well.
