Odyssey: At the Mercy of the Winds
At the next port, the wind god Aeolus gave Odysseus a sack containing all the winds - except the western one, which was to guide him home. When they were almost at Ithaca, Odysseus’ curious men untied the sack, releasing the winds and blowing their ship far off course. They first landed in the land of the giant cannibalistic Laestrygonians, who destroyed all the ships except Odysseus’. Next, they reached the island of Aeaea, where the sorceress Circe lived, who turned some of Odysseus’ men into pigs. Odysseus resisted her spell because the god Hermes gave him a plant to protect him, but Circe demanded he stay with her for a year in exchange for restoring his friends. She advised Odysseus to consult the prophet Tiresias in the underworld, where he learned that his homeland was occupied by invaders, prompting him to hasten his return.
