I don't remember all the details just a bright flash and the sharp pain through my body. Lightning is around 2.7 Billion volts Direct Current which will Arch and strike a path to Ground through a human body if its the best conductor at the time the Lightning in the area strikes.

Can’t it happen even if you aren’t directly hit by lightning? For example if it hits 15-20ft away from you.

I've always wanted a tattoo, but never foudn the one I want. Not that I'm going to star flying kite in thunderstorms, but if I ever get hit I'm going to get it tattooed before the hospital.

While I would NEVER want to be struck by lightning, and can't even imagine how one proceeses that trauma (if they manage to live through it), I think I would maybe be tempted to get it high-res documented and tattooed on me later.
And I don't even like needles.

Maybe it's just me??
