Brazil landslides and massive flooding kills dozens | BBC News

Dozens of people have died after heavy rain triggered flooding and landslides in Brazil’s southernmost state.

According to officials, 55 people are confirmed to have died, with another 74 missing in Rio Grande do Sul.

Nearly 25,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes since the storms began last Saturday, and at least half a million people have been left without power and clean water.

More than half of the 497 cities in the state have been affected by the storms, with roads and bridges destroyed in several areas.

In the state of São Paulo (specially in the countryside) also got affected by heavy rains and severe floods by the beginning of this year. My mom lost her stuff as well. Very sad of what we are facing here.

It´s the WORST flooding since records began around 1880s. So, the worst in at least 150 years! Guaíba lake, which shores Porto Alegre, superpassad the 1941 record (4, 76 m) and today reached 5, 35 m!!

If you analyze previous years consecutively, we had massive rain disasters in Brazil, but these floods in Rio Grande do Sul are historic, there are no precedents. It's an entire state hit by tragedy. We currently have more than 115 people missing, 80 people dead and thousands of people homeless. And to make matters worse, there is still a forecast of more rain and a drop in temperature.

Why you are hearing a specialist from Australia about climate impact instead of hearing a local specialist from the flood region where I live? We have way more point of view of what's going on here than someone who's not even here to show what's the real situation really like.
