Would also love to hear your thoughts on ‘washability’ of dresses - I just can’t get over the fact that all high end occasion dresses are dry clean only. I know it's different in the UK but black is a color that many people (including myself) have worn to weddings for a long time. It's classic, slimming and you can never go wrong with it for any occasion really. General more muted colors and neutrals always also work as long as they are not close to white or cream. The rules in the UK are more strict I'd say. We obviously do not wear hats or fascinators for any occasion, except the Kentucky Derby. It might be kind of fun if we did though! I'd have to go with a very small one though and a very simple to not feel odd or garish.

I do have to disagree. I might not remember what friends wore to the last wedding, but pictures will tell. And I feel like, especially in a friends group where a lot of people know each other, there is often a picture of the couple with the friends group and then you are the one always in the same dress.

Not too sexy seems to be an issue many women are not cognizant of in the US and it horrifies me on many occasions. My brother got married two years ago. It was a backyard wedding on a large country property in western Michigan. One of his friend's showed up to the reception with a date wearing a God awful Herve Leger style bandage dress. I've long hated that dress style for ANY occasion. Worse she was very thin and very obviously had a huge boob job and and even worse BBL or something that resulted in her rear looking very large and oddly shaped. It stuck out like a shelf. I could have set a few drinks on it and they would have stayed there! I pointed it out to my sister who isn't into fashion but she agreed she looked sluty. Woman can be sexy without looking that way and for some reason many women seem to prioritize looking sexy. She was not clubbing in Vegas for God's sake! She stuck out so badly. My opinion was supported the next morning when the bride's mom and the other older women were talking about her and I said yes, I agree and I noticed that right away. You couldn't miss her if you tried! We all laughed. My gentle and subtle style advice has saved 3 wedding I was in from hideous fashion disasters! I appreciated what they wanted but just suggested a few tweaks that made a huge difference. Just suggestions so as not to offend them. Thankfully, they liked my choices and my opinion. They have long looked to me for style advice so I was very happy to help them have what they wanted but just slight changes that made it infinitely better. Phew!
