I've been doing the same thing for the last 30 years myself but I also add 1 screw per hinge and 2 in each strike plate for added security.

Depending on the flooring, I put a piece of 3/4" ply under the threshold so I can extend the flooring under the door rather than trying to butt the flooring to the threshold. This also makes room for rugs or mats that buyers may want at the entry.

I like the flashing tape idea I thought I was the only one who did that. Also below zero and snow is ever day framing for us here in Michigan at this time of year.

As a maintenance supervisor of a residential apartment complex can confirm pulling off the door seal and drilling into the framing is perfect from prefinished doors do it all the time. That door seal is like trim you can hide a lot behind it

Just below -31 here today in good Canada, with 55km/h winds. Makes hanging rafters fun lol.

Good tips! Yes, I love putting good 3" screws in door installs. Also helps prevent future door sags.

As a rough carpenter taught by an old school guy, i would always just throw four 16 spikes through the brick mold, boom done. Oh boy how that was wrong! We now officially have a box of deck screws in the trailer, thanks to me, and use them on our sliders and service doors. And that spot behind the weather strip is right where we put them.

Great advice for NOOBs
Experienced guys like us who have commented, have used all those tips & tricks behind the quions (foam weather strip), behind the hinges or in place of the 3/4" screw

I use the saw blade wax crayon or a (bar of soap) on the threads to lube for smoother penetration less splitting stronger hold.

We were setting doors in Asheville today...only raining though. Good tip on the planing of high spots. We do renovation work and it's rare that the subfloor isn't humped. I usually shim with the low spots with composite shims but I will try that planer trick

Once a again great content. I use the gasket trick but I use finish head screws and put 16 gauge nail.
