How Scientists Brought an Animal Back from Extinction

Horses are the Only Animal to Go Extinct, and Come Back to Life. This is their crazy story.

So in the 1960s, these rare horses lived in the incredible Gobi desert. And because they were fat, locals hunted them for food. But the last few unusually harsh winters made survival hard. And before anyone knew what was happening, the horses were extinct.

But some scientists had a crazy idea to bring them back.

Cuz there were still some left in European zoos. So if brought together and released into the wild, there was a chance of saving them. But scientists were running out of time. You see, Europe just went through 2 world wars. So by 1945 only 31 horses remained in Europe.

And by 1950 there were only 12.

Scientists needed to convince governments to do a rare thing. Work together instead of fight. But by the 90's governments agreed and brought the horses back to Mongolia. And in 2005 the status of the Takhi horse went from "extinct in the wild" to "endangered".

Technically, these horses are not wild, but feral. Meaning they were domesticated then released into the wild. Similarly, a runaway domestic chicken escaping into the wild would not be considered wild, but feral. Not all species survive being put into the wilderness again. Seems like some learned (i.e., not instinctive) behaviours are necessary for survival in the wild. But the Takhi horses made it. There are roughly 2, 000 Takhi in the world right now, and the largest number of them live at Hustai National Park, within 100 km of Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar.

1st! The Takhi horses 🐎 in this video are also known as Przewalski's horses or Mongolian 🇲🇳 wild horses. I remember seeing some in the Munich zoo.
