Calvinist Apologist Leaves Christianity | Tyler Vela

In a surprising turn of events, Tyler Vela, a prominent online advocate for Christianity, has publicly renounced his faith. This announcement has sent shockwaves through the Christian community, though it's likely that some adherents will resort to the tired old "no true Scotsman" fallacy to distance themselves from his departure.

Nonetheless, Vela's decision to abandon his once deeply-held beliefs is a significant one, and here he sit's down with MythVision to explain his reasoning behind this dramatic shift in perspective.

Dark Night of the Soul is a mystical text written in “shadow” or “twilight” language, like Paul, two ways at once, like the Jewish Midrash. The first way is literal and the second is a “hidden” mystical meaning. It is about the mystical practice of one-pointed meditation leading to Ein Sof, The Endless One, The Infinite, The Void - a super consciousness of infinite space-time. It is written in the homo-romantic style of Jewish and Sufi mystics because his teacher was Jewish forced to convert to Christianity.

was hoping for specifics to these contradictions, not generalities

I liked Tyler better when Beaker was interviewing him.

We do notice the differences. We just realize they aren’t a big deal since the text is, you know, ours. It doesn’t belong to everyone. It isn’t a textbook, and it isn’t objective. The Gospel accounts are telling different versions of the same story from different perspectives, and the emphasis is placed on certain details over others. How is this a big deal? It is only if you’re looking for a way to discredit it. This is a tiresome line of thinking. I wouldn’t tell a story to my children the same way I would tell it to my wife, or the way I would tell it to my subordinates, or the way I would tell it to my friends, or the way I would tell it to someone I just met whose first language isn’t English. Do you see my point?

Edit: What isn’t “accurate?” What isn’t trustworthy? This is nonsense. Do you think that every narrative is told in a scientific, analytical way? God forbid! That would be not only incredibly boring, but would not impact anyone at all. Look at how animated you get. Imagine if you spoke about these things in a deadpan monotone. Totally different effect. The principle is the same, and you are foisting modern sensibilities onto an ancient text with the assumption that your sensibilities are superior to the ancient world. Why do you think that?

This is getting repetitive and boring. Yikes.
