In 1948, Alberto Ruz Lhuillier, a tenacious archaeologist, found himself standing before the majestic ruins of Palenque. For years, explorers had marveled at its architecture, yet none had dared to delve deeper. But that all changed when Ruz discovered a series of plugs hidden in the temple floor.
With a heart pounding with anticipation, Ruz and his team removed the plugs. Beneath them lay a hidden staircase, spiralling down into the temple's depths.
It took Ruz until 1952 to remove all the debris that was blocking the stairway, but at the bottom was a large triangular stone.
With the help of his workers, Ruz managed to move the stone with a crowbar. Inside was a giant stone slab with mysterious inscriptions. Ruz was able to lift it. He inserted his flashlight and gasped. The beam of light revealed a human skull. It was the skull of Pakal the Great, the legendary ruler of Palenque.
