Imagine you see a few bees buzzing around. PLTR tells you where the hives are and how much honey they have and how much they had last year and will have next year.

Imagine you run a trucking company. PLTR tells you your most profitable routes, when and where to get gas, the likelihood of delay on a certain load, the best employees and who is (probably) stealing from you.

Imagine you are looking for a lover. PLTR sniffs your sweaty sock and sends a poetic love letter to your perfect match.

This video does a terrible job explaining what Palantir does. It's a bit more complex than this, but essentially they make a series of moderately priced apps to let their customers solve a super expensive problem government agencies and big businesses often face - they have tons of data in several places that doesn't fit neatly together, and is hard to understand. Palantir makes it easy for their customers to manage an "ontology" (which is basically a skeleton defining the types of "things" the business cares about and how they relate to each other), and maps all of their data onto that "ontology" and makes it easy to view with a user-friendly interface like a strategy video game. They don't mine data, they don't collect data, they don't do surveillance, and they don't produce intelligence. They just make it easy for organizations that do those things to stay organized.

I've never read or heard a concrete definition of what palantir ACTUALLY does, and how they make money. I've just had this 'software as a service' solution for all problems, to better visualise data, type of thing. It's no wonder their share price is dropping and they're now spending a fortune on SALES AND MARKETING.

Great to understand the business but does it make me any money as an investor. It’s not profitable and with government as customers it’s questionable, it will ever be. CEO and Thiel made it already billionaires. So the IPO did its job. Will it further do the job and for who.
