Should you buy an Intel i7-5930K in 2023?

Testing the Intel i7-5930K six core CPU in 9 popular and demanding games in 2023, using an RTX 3070 discrete GPU.

In 2014, Intel offered two near-identical six-core i7s for the new socket 2011 v3. Both had unlocked multipliers, the same cache size, Haswell architecture and hyperthreading. Aside from relatively niche use cases, the $200 price difference was hard to justify, making one of the two chips an absolute bargain even at the time.

Of course, this isn't that chip, it's the other one. At least in 2023 they're both cheap...

Still on my i7 5820k and msi x99 gaming board, runs like a dream.

I had i7 5820k, I remember being perplexed by the price difference whereas on paper they would be almost identical.

I Gotta say, I have a ryzen 5 5600 in my pc and for 30€ this is a pretty compelling competitor

Been waiting for this! I said this before but I miss my 4.7GHz 5820K so much. I'd still be using it if my AsRock X99 MiniITX motherboard wasn't so limiting!

these are always loads of fun to watch. cool to see how well these cpus still hold up. also you are almost at 20k subs! :D

I think it's sad you only have 19k subs. Your more professional than most with over million subs

The really smart thing to do with the x99 boards back in the day was buy cheap Xeon e5 1600 series cpus, as they had similar specs to the i7s, cheaper, and were actually overclockable. However when broadwell E came out, intel removed the ability to overclock e5 1600 cpus

I've just recently had upgraded an old x99 motherboard with a 16 core Xeon E5-2698V3 for productivity tasks. Performance is pretty solid even for today's standards, but the argument you mentioned for overall platform costs is absolutely valid. I wouldn't build such a system from scratch anymore since motherboards are overpriced.

I remember from my core 2 duo days how that (platform at least, if not the CPU if you weren't paying attention to benchmarks and just price) was a dream upgrade... Damn stuff got A LOT BETTER in the last few years.

I guess the more PCIe lanes are more targeted at workstation use with multi-GPU, where PCIe lanes could become a bottleneck. I'm currently looking for an affordable system for GPU fluid simulations, and that needs ideally 4 GPUs with PCIe x16. X99 has only PLX splitters, so PCIe bandwidth is still limited, but the 40 lane CPUs could make a difference over 28 lane CPU there.

still got my first 5820K laying around, mobo died. Used motherboards are too expensive to justify using it, let alone powerdraw and maximum 3333 ram, but it was one of my favorite CPU's introducing me to DDR4 overclocking

In 2021 I snagged a $280 6950x to replace the 5930k I'd been running since November 2016. Also had to purchase new ram (4 sticks of 16GB 3200 DDR4) as overclocking attempt with the 6950x burnt out an 8 GB stick of Dominator 2666. I cannot part with the 5930k, is still a very efficient and powerful 6 core CPU. Was always able to sustain 4.6 Ghz for gaming sessions, with it and the MSI Titanium motherboard it sat within.

6 cores at 4.6Ghz, cooled with a Corsair 280mm AIO. Excellent CPU for almost 5 years.

I am using this cpu ATM. For gaming it still does the job. In terms of performance from my research it is similar to a i5 10400

I could be wrong, but if I recall correctly x99 was the first platform that supported nvme. This was my first time using it at least. I loved my 5820k.
