Feeling at home is based on self-placement within the surrounding society, and that only works if you have internalised the social rules of your environment. Without that, you don't know what others think of you and your behaviour, and to know that without having to think about it is a necessity for the feeling of identity people need. Identity is always cultural identity. If you move abroad you lose that part. And that's why the multicultural ideal of everybody can live everywhere happily ever after is a big load of crap. Culture shock is a major identity crisis and it will affect everybody who leaves the culture they have been brought up in. And it doesn't matter how nice and welcoming the surrounding new society is, it's just a part of what happens as a result of migration. Nobody's fault (well maybe except of who ever created the social animal homo sapiens), just something people who consider moving abroad should be aware of.

I'm surprised how similar your experiences as an expat is to mine as an international student (a Malaysian studying in the US). Thank you for sharing!

I am an expat from the USA. I live in Austria. I may very well end up living here "forever" but I will always be an American citizen. I married an Austrian, so that was my reason for moving here. I don't think being an "expat" means that you always intend to move back. Thanks for sharing your side of things though! Always interesting to hear from others.

Hallo Diana, your Videos are very good. Yes, in Germany is not easy to find new Friends > everybody has to go out and do something. I don´t know, what you have studied in Cannada, so you can finish your "Study" / Education in Germany ( If you want..). For example make maybe a "Abitur" on an Evening-High-School ( Abendgymnasium or Kolleg ) and after you can study in Berlin in several Forms ( there are different ways.. and many Possibilities.. ) > so you will ( everybody / every Expat..) will find new Friends.. "Secret Tipp"..: ..as an Canadian Girl with "Colombian Roots".. > maybe you can go out Dancing with your Boy Friend > Salsa > there is a VERY GOOD >> Salsa Club in the "Grüner and Roter Salon" in the "Volksbühne".. This a absolutly COOL for Dancing.. Try this.. Berlin has so much Possibilities for "Free Time", Education and Buisness.. Go "inside" your Sool and ask yourself, what you want to do.. Have a good time.. Bye..

Btw You have to try schaumküsse. If you havent done it yet. There maybe several companies which manufacture them. But i only know dickmanns by storck and köhlers küsse by köhlers. Different tastes exists. Try the schaumküsse of both companies. I prefer them cold between 5 and 10 degree celsius. I like köhlers küsse much more. Altough dickmanns are more common in the stores. You can get them dir example in globus supermarket

while i never tried it in English most customer service interaction and appointments can be done via mail, they might still call you back but you can write and translate a mail without stress and if you mention that your German is not the best there is a high chance that the callback will be done by someone who can speak better English than the random person you get when calling directly.

Hey, you live in Berlin for more than 2 years, right? How many times did you have to move? And is it real to find the long term rent say in first 6 month so wouldn’t have to switch places every 2 months....

how old are you? do you think it would be easier to feel like Germany is home if you start going to college when you move there? it might be hard to feel like a country is home if your life is already "settled" before you move there and you don't have a lot of formative experiences in the new country. do you think once you pass a certain age it's harder to move to a new country? and what age would that be?

Id like to move there. Maybe its a sign of aging that I would like to live a peaceful life.
