With reduced loft on the face, long irons need a centred strike with enough speed to keep the ball airborne. Slower speeds won’t create the backspin needed.

A sweeping feel through the ball (where the divot is shallow) helps to launch the ball high, whereas steep and getting ahead of the ball with the body creates issues. You will need a lot of speed to have something functional.

Above shot is a 4 iron from 217 yards. Slight upslope that came off perfectly to 20ft (maybe a 1 in 10 shot that needed a combination of the above three points to work).
Plenty of players have found success with hybrids and woods, so maybe a better option rather than long irons for most?
