I was in a foreign country (military) and I was driving by myself (woman) saw a young girl at a gas station hitch hiking so I stopped to help her - she opened my back passenger door to get in and out of the bushes came two young men - before I knew it they were all in the back seat - I somewhat understood the language and they were talking about how stupid I was to pick her up - needless to say I never picked up another hitchhiker! 😊

Escape California 2 1/2 years ago moved to Arizona where I can conceal carry. I don’t leave the house without my firearm with me. Keep alert situation awareness all the time thank you, sir. Excellent points.

I have my groceries delivered so I don't have to put up with nasty people and their crap. At 86 years old and multiple health problems, grocery delivery is a lifesaver for me.

Appreciate your helpful safety tips. I’m 68, and always try to be situationally aware. One good piece of advice is never touch your cellphone when in transitional spaces.

Excellent tips. Awareness is so important. As far as people you work with- a few years ago a coworker suddenly was gone from work. No layoffs, no rumors, nothing. What happened to Larry? Management- oh he was transferred to Texas. And then another coworker found him on a list of child predators. He was transferred all right - to prison for 2 years. Seemed like a fairly normal guy, married with 2 kids. You just never

Just read locally of a senior loading groceries in to her trunk and 2 scammers came to offer help and while one was loading groceries, the other stole wallet out of her back pack. Seniors! Unless you have eyes in the back of your head, don't wear a back pack! And avoid purses. I own several very nice purses but I wear cargo pants with buttons to close the flaps. I carry one piece of ID (no bank cards) and just enough cash for what I was going to purchase. When out and about, I dress in thrift store clothing even though I have much better. Few thieves target poor people.

Thank you for the tips.
I'm solo, not young, and try to keep my head on a swivel.
Nice kid to help your wife.❤

I try my best to run errands at off peak times. Less people to deal with, and it make it easy to assess threats because of the open parking lots and distance. Distance is your friend. I try not to keep my head down, and usually have that "1000 yard stare" because it helps assess things and it's a deterrent (hard target). I used to make eye contact with some potential threats and sometimes that works but other times it has backfired and made me appear open to interaction.

I recently switched from driving a car everywhere, to taking the bus or walking everywhere. What an eye opener! I now use a cross body pouch under my coat with one card. I also carry Naloxone kit with me if I'm going into the city centre. People want to talk to me all the time now. Some nice folks and some obnoxious creeps. So much safety to be had inside a vehicle with doors locked.

Thank you for the great tips ! I’m one who doesn’t trust anyone that I don’t know well I’m always aware of my surroundings when I’m going into a store better to be safe then sorry as a senior as we don’t have the same strength we had when we were in our younger years so best to keep working out as you never know, as we live in a very scary world now❤

I hate Walmart except for oil changes. Some folk think it is an inexpensive place to shop, but that is not true. Many older women are alone in their later years. If I really need help loading heavy items, I will ask for someone from the store to help me, for instance when I buy compacted hay, straw as well as rabbit pellets from a Feed Store for my rescued bunnies. They are happy to load it for me. Also, I make it a point not to use ATMs except during daylight hours. I avoid using toilets at Rest Areas if possible, especially at night, or in areas where I don't feel comfortable. If that means not traveling at night, then so be it. There are parts of town where I don't feel comfortable at any time, so choose to avoid them.

Often individuals will 'case' neighbourhoods posing as tradesmen looking for new clients. I never open my door to someone I do not know, or am not expecting, and I call the Police if I see suspicious activity. Even if it is a family member coming to visit, I let them either knock, or use their own key. I never leave the door unlocked, because I am expecting someone. And, I do not leave doors and windows unlocked when I go out, even if it is just to visit a neighbor, or do an errand.

Whenever I go out somewhere, I have always tried to park about 1 to 2 parking spots from the nearest vehicle on either side of me so that I can maximize visibility. When cars are tight in a crowded parking lot, theives, carjackers, etc look for their targets to be close in and easily attacked. Always be aware of your surroundings from a tactical viewpoint.

Oh boy, oh boy, I can see the negative comments coming. Don't you know that you aren't supposed to say anything bad about the homeless? That they are all nice people just down on their luck; the same goes for the mentally ill, they're not dangerous--until they are. You are so right, it is up to us to be situationally aware and take care of ourselves, because nobody else will. There are people who will defend the homeless/mentally ill all day long and call the rest of us all kinds of names for not wanting to have anything to do with them or worse telling others to avoid them, but when it is you that is the victim they are nowhere to be found.

Thank you for all these tips! I am 75 & I am too trusting. I have one more Suggestion, be careful when Parking in a Garage. Many years ago, a dear friend of mine was raped. He had snuck into the garage after she parked!

It is not a bad idea to get a big ol pair of mens boots etc... to keep by the door. The garage is a good place to hang a beer sign, licence plate, flag. Whatever a man may have.

Applying angled mirrors INSIDE the trunk lid will assist you in seeing what is being you when the door is open.
