Besides the Pinta Island tortoise, at least one other subspecies of the Galapagos tortoise has become extinct. The subspecies once found on Floreana Island is believed to have become extinct by 1850 due to hunting. This was just fifteen years after Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835.
