I learned in retail to NEVER tell somebody who was upset or angry to "have a lovely day, " or anything like that. It almost always resulted in them being more upset at best, and reactions like this at worst. I learned to say something along the lines of, "I'm so sorry, this is messed up and I wish I could do more for you. I hope your day gets better." Sometimes they're determined to stay mad anyways, but sometimes it did help to at least defuse them from taking it out on me, and made some of the saner customers feel like I wasn't just brushing off their feelings. Even if I knew the situation was perfectly fair or even their own fault, showing even a bit of false empathy can go a long way in customer service sometimes. I didn't go out of my way to enable the real shit customers, but I did admittedly try to keep this from happening as much as possible. Nobody in retail gets paid enough for this, and I sure as shit didn't either.
