CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After killing his seatmate, Striker (Robert Hays) is invited into the cockpit to take over the plane.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
This spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting -- a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (Robert Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose "jive" has to be subtitled. Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor, launching a new phase of the actor's career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles. The trio of directors Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker responsible for the film would eventually go on to solo careers, but not before making Top Secret! and Ruthless People.

I work with someone named Shirley and have been trying to months to work this into a conversation without making it seemed forced... hopefully it happens soon.

"Cockpit! What is it!"
"Oh it's a little room where the pilot sits. That's not important right now" Amazing XD

It's insane that "Don't Call me Shirley" still makes me laugh the 500th time I've seen it. It is just one of those lines that will be funny forever.

"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley." Only Leslie Nielsen could say this while keeping a straight face. What a classic!

It's an entirely different kind of flying... all together...
IT'S AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT KIND OF FLYING

I finally just got that joke...30 odd years later.

"Surely you can't be serious"
"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley"

I have no idea why, but this line gets me everytime. Even if I just think of it.

The part with the never ending control panels and buttons as the music intensifies. Brilliant

I had a colleague of mine verbatim say "Surely it must be in the file." I quickly responded with "It is in the file. And dont call me Shirley." Lol. Immediately both of us laughed super hard.

This is really one of those one in the million kind of movies where no matter how many times you seen it you will piss yourself with laughter each time.
Oh good old times when main stream comedies where actually smart and funny.

"The cockpit. What is it?"
"It's the little room in the front of the plane where the pilot sits. But that's not important right now."

“We’re going deep and we’re going hard”

“Surely you can’t be serious”

“I’m serious and don’t call me Shirley.”

1:24 "all, together" 1:28 Stryker face I nearly died of laughter. How could these three actors keep absolutely straight faces (and blank stares) when saying those lines... they were PROFESSIONALS, I tell yah. I wonder how many takes it took.

I first watched this movie when I was 14, it was a particularly cold December and I was dead ill at the time. We ( my family and myself) got up to watch this all together, and it was the fondest memory I ever had. We were all laughing and crying and I can honestly say itactually made me feel better. A truly legendary comedy that will never be lost to time.
