Explosions rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Friday as Israel said it struck Hezbollah’s headquarters. The group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was the target.
Israel has carried out a devastating wave of air raids in Lebanon’s capital Beirut that it said targeted the headquarters of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. A series of massive explosions sent huge clouds of smoke soaring above the densely populated Haret Hreik neighbourhood in Dahiyeh, southern Beirut, around dusk on Friday.
The strikes flattened buildings in a densely populated area, killing at least six people and wounding dozens of others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Israel has launched further strikes on southern Beirut, targeting what it says are stores of Hezbollah weapons.
Israel didn’t notify the US about the strikes until the attack was underway, according to the US defense secretary. Sources say the lack of notice added to US frustrations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has sent mixed messages on a US-led ceasefire proposal and made a combative speech at the UN General Assembly earlier Friday.
The Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs on Friday in an attack that shook the Lebanese capital and sent thick clouds of smoke over the city.
Hezbollah's al-Manar television reported that four buildings were destroyed and there were many casualties in the multiple strikes, which marked a major escalation of Israel's conflict with the heavily armed, Iran-backed Hezbollah.
