Let's get the facts straight. There is a general misunderstanding that in Hellas (what widely known as Greece) all the buildings, architecture etc is blue and white. No, no and no.
The only place you can find blue and white houses is on the Aegean islands, known as Cyclades. Each and every part of Hellas has different architectural patterns based on the geomorphology and the elements. If you visit northern Hellas you will find houses made out of stone, red roof tiles and wood. The reason is simple, stone and wood is the most common material you can find in those areas. If you visit the islands and again it depends on which island you visit, Aegean Islands is what you see on pictures and ads such as Myconos, Santorini, Milos etc. The reason is that during summer time the temperature is pretty high, so white color reflects the light, making the interior house temperature less warm. Another reason is because the blue and white represents the color of the national flag, the sea, the sun and the sky. If you visit Athens or Thessaloniki do not expect to find those white and blue houses, the architecture is mainly urban and postmodern.

I have family in Greece, I can’t remember where but we visited them once when I was 5 and the one thing I can remember most was the white houses. Every house in their twin was white, I thought it was so cool.
