Invert vs Inverse in Photoshop

Selecting the mask in layers and trying the invert “command + I” will not work for me in photoshop 2023. What am I doing wrong ?

Hello - Inverse is greyed out on my “Select” menu. I do have the layer properly selected, it’s a jpeg image that I have selected. Any idea how to get the inverse option to work again?

Do you know why my inverse option is grayed out? I've been trying for weeks to add texture to text and everytime I try to inverse the text its greyed out? I cant find anywhere online that can help me :(
