Day of the Dead Performer / Butch Locsin

Each year, cities all over Mexico see streets filled with people dressed in stunning, ornate costumes, their faces painted as skulls, as they come together to celebrate Día de Muertos - the Day of the Dead. The centuries-old tradition, which takes place from 31 October to 2 November, maintains that death is a natural part of life and that remembering the dead should be joyful.

I've always been drawn to the colour and symbolism behind this celebration and in particular, to the work of LA-based artist Butch Locsin whose performances celebrate life, death and humanity with larger-than-life skull masks and colourful smoke grenades.
