This car is not in first place by chance. It's only natural to start with the Terrafugia Transition, as it was the vehicle that showed the world that flying cars were finally going to be a serious ambition. And yes, it was in April 2012, at the International Auto Show in New York, that the Terrafugia revealed its secrets to the general public. To tell the truth, the vehicle had already made its first flight in 2009. At the time, it was therefore THE proof that flying cars were coming out of the imagination to become a reality! What are the specific characteristics of the Transition? First of all, it has four wheels and two doors, for “only” two passengers. Behind these doors are hidden real folding wings, as well as an even further aft propeller. Thus, its width is 2.3 meters in car mode, and 8 meters once the wings are deployed! Since the controls of a car are different from those of an airplane, the dashboard is crowded to say the least. That said, it is not a nuisance for the vehicle, because according to its manufacturers, it is possible to switch from driving mode to flight mode in just under a minute! By the way, the Terrafugia Transition has the advantage of having a hybrid engine, which avoids overconsumption of fuel. When the car is powered by this engine, it can fly at 160 kilometers per hour, at an altitude of 2740 meters. Moreover, this model is not a simple prototype as we speak to you: it is marketed for an estimated price of around 400,000 dollars!
