Phonics sound blending with “Consonant Blends” and “Consonant Digraphs”Phonics blending is a way for students to decode words. With phonics blending, students fluently join together the individual sound-spellings (also called letter-sound correspondence) in a word.  There are three progressive stages in sound blending: CVC, Consonant Blends & Digraphs and “Vowel Phonograms”. A consonant blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but each sound may be heard in the blend.  The consonant blends include: Initial blends (fl [as in flat], cr[as in crab], …), final blends ( ft [as in lift], mp [as in romp], …) and double consonants (ss [as in boss], dd [as in add]. In a consonant digraph, two consonants stand together to represent a single sound. The consonant digraphs in Phonics 44 system are: sh, ch, th(θ), th(δ), ng and nk.
