Capturing Lofoten in Unreal Engine 5

This video is all about how I created a small, Lofoten-Inspired environment in Unreal Engine 5. This video isn't a step-by-step tutorial like most of my other videos, but rather a workflow and process video. You'll learn how I created everything you see in the intro, from the ocean, the mountains, and how I scanned an old arctic cabin, with the help of RealityCapture.

I'm not a dev, I never worked with any game engine, never modeled anything in 3D, never had any interaction with photogrammetry... and here I am sitting, utterly mesmerized by the concept, the execution, the process and the result. Thank you for sharing, absolutely fascinating video.

As a local lofoten resident, this first came to my (weird) mind: No one would build a cabin of this type here. Perhaps if it stood on pillars and been properly anchored. This cabin would probably have been washed away by big waves or wind in the first autumn/winter storm, it is located without shelter from the wind (trees, outcrops etc) on a small very exposed islet. And the cabin is too far down to the sea, indicated by the seaweed. Normal high tide is too close to the cabin. If there is a large high tide, the cabin would probably be under water. (Sorry to say that..).

But.. it LOOKS extremely good!! Very believable and beautiful! Impressive how meticulous you are with the details, fantastic job! Thank you so much for this gem of a video!! :)

My grandfather was born on the Skrova Island, Lofoten in 1926 I believe. He used to tell stories, life was as hard as you could imagine for a society like this one back in the day but he was also blessed to have been able to grow up in such a special place in that specific time. He later became a pastor and the best of men. Their childhood home is still standing and my parents visit sometimes. Hopefully I'll be able to go and check it out one day myself but I can assure you that there's no doubt that anyone who makes the journey won't regret it.

I'll be very Honest now, Myself being a Security Engineer, never thought about this line of work, or even cared after watching a scenery of 3D Model. You made a huge perspective change and deep from my heart i am really appreciating the work you have done and efforts you have taken to share this to all of the world. I don't get to see such great content but you inspired me to do great work and enjoying the same while doing, Thank you William :)

I've being working into the gaming industry for almost four years as a lighting artist and i've been following your work since the first video you published. Your work inspires me every day and made me a better lighting artist. Keep up the good work. This video is by far one of my favourites. Absolutely amazinggg :)

This was one of those moments where the content and value in the video is so good that you have to stop the video half way and subscribe to make sure you don’t forget to do it at the end.

I find myself returning to this video almost daily. Not just for the art, but understanding the workflow has helped with my own work tremendously. Recently created a collection on mountains in Gaea to use for future projects. Such a lifesaver!

As an enjoyer of 3D models and 3D art, i truely do respect the work people like you do. Going to a scene and getting a model of the REAL THING. Cracks in the boards, bits of rot spread into places that make PERFECT sence, because it's a REAL THING! It's a wonderful thing.

I need to comment on this. I'm 49 years old now, but many years ago I secured a place at a Univesity in the UK to study Game Design. I told my parents at the time, and they immediately shut me down, and told me there was no money in it. I wasn't concerned about money. I felt I had a real passion for it from playing and marveling at graphics from thousands of games starting with the ZX81, Atari ST, into the PC 486 towers with voodoo 3d cards, up to the latest PC hardware.

I didn't take the course, I was living at home at the time and didn't have much choice in the matter. I'm happy with what I do now, it's not much but I get by. When I watched your video today I felt that pull, and imagined that I could possibly do what you are achieving if I had just stood my ground all those years ago. I have never come across your Channel before, it just appeared on my home page and i'm glad I found you. To you young un's out there, if it feels right and you have a passion for it whatever it may be, chase it down and do it. You will regret it later on in life I promise you.

It's really nice to see someone else with a lisp. I am so self conscious about my lisp and always feel I sound less intelligent, but it's awesome seeing someone else with a similar way of talking.

By far the greatest shot I've seen from you. Actually brought tears to my eyes. I can feel the cold breeze, the isolation, the sound of the ocean and wind, the scale of the world. It's literally what 3D is supposed to be.

I was sitting here thinking like who would have thought this cabin from the 1800s would be imported in unreal 5. Right before u started talking about why not just create it urself. This is the first video I've seen of ur very impressive stuff.

I'm a historian by trade, so the ability to capture all the nuances of old structures is amazing and inspiring. Absolutely worth the trip and the effort!
