Fun Facts: The lunatic cultist says some warped and remixed words at the start of his fight, one of the possible quotes being "I am the moon, you know".

When I learned this via the wiki, gotta say, this really gives him a lot more character to me. Wish I knew his other lines.

Other Fun Facts: While the mask is an obvious reference to plague doctor masks, around the same time in history that those were being used, the word "lunatic" actually meant something like "moon related" or "caused by the moon", the latter often used to describe diseases that were thought to be caused by the moon. Additionally, after the fight, the text "Celestial creatures are invading!" Appears before "The Lunatic Cultist was slain!" Implying that he finished his ritual just before dying. He is also the only boss that is supposedly human.

Long story short, underrated boss in my opinion.


Edit: This got a tad more traction than expected, and I was thinking of other facts to slap onto here for awhile but ended up hearing about a theory instead. (Fairly commonplace theory but if you haven't heard it here I go I guess)

Redigit once made a post on social media saying that the cultists' ritual was actually to *prevent* the moon lord from being resummoned. Once you interrupt them however, the celestial pillars are supposedly the last defense against the moon lord's return. It would make sense as to why he drops the ancient manipulator, as if the pillars are really some sort of construct and/or magic spell by the cultists then they would likely have the materials to work such substances. This "Player is the bad guy" theory is a fun concept and probably a great rabbit hole to go down, but as I didn't learn or remember too much maybe you finely educated lads in the comment thread could fill everyone in. Worth looking into.

HIS plan is failing. The Champion is more powerful than they have ever been. The cultists only have one option left: An incomplete summoning. But even a weakened version will be enough to stop the Champion, or so they hope.

I always use the UFO mount and go to a sky island when fighting the lunatic cultist. It just makes the fight more fun
