Amen! When I started authoring papers at a univeristy neuro lab, I was blown away, well, by many wastes, but one of them was the scam that is research publishing. And what especially blows my mind is that the state's taxpayers who've bankrolled the research don't have access to its findings - unless they pay a exorbitant sum of money to purchase each and every article. Glad to hear someone within academia voicing this out loud! 👍 You are brave. BTW, Esoterica is amazing. You are preaching to the choir, Dr Sledge! I’ve been on the same page for years, though for different reasons at first. About 20 years ago I wrote a paper that my professor submitted for publication in an academic journal. Years later, I tracked down the paper online (yes, I had long lost my work), I could not read it without paying for a monthly subscription. Ten dollars and change a month (this was in 2015 money, so I’m sure it’s like $20 now) to have access to my own work, and the one brag I had from my time in college (I never used the degree; I ended up becoming a firefighter/EMT the year after finishing school).

As someone who has worked in academic libraries for a couple of years now, absolutely. They had little to no value while taking the biggest slices of the money pie. In Open Access, they CHARGE the authors to publish their work, making sure they are still the ones making the most profit (and I'm not talking maintenance fees for their websites or anything, I'm talking upwards of thousands of euros to publish a single article).
It's one of the main reasons I want as little to do with it as possible, I refuse to pay these bozos

It’s also morally outrageous that the tuition and fees being charged to students of colleges and universities. I blame Ronald Reagan and his war on the middle class. Before he became governor, every college and university in California was free to the citizens of California.

So TRUE! Hope someone with influence is reading this. We need to demand free college. For anyone will the will and smarts to go it should be there. Programs that pay to educate for residency training too at least minimum wage. The US would look very different!
