Rules are so that anything you start with is part of you, and it’s measured the closest part of you to the mat is measured. IE the sunglasses get measured officially. In HS, I made it to state level for long jump. We had a guy get fifth place because a spike from his cleat came off as he jumped on his last jump, landing 6’2” from the mat, the judge saw this and that’s what got measured. The unofficial jump would have put him third.

For anyone confused and just saying "it's about how far you jump, nothing else", the official rules state that they measure any impression in the ground caused by the jumper which usually means that if you place your hand behind you when you land they measure from your hand print. Tbf idk what happens with impressions caused by clothing but ik that if he walked through the sand to get it then they'd measure from the closest footprint to the beginning. Essentially they do it so you can't just stretch your leg to the end.

Ok explanation in track when you are doing a long jump and your coach tells you to takeoff your sunglasses and you say no the reason for it is because when you’re jumping and the last thing that falls off of you, that’s why in training they tell you to keep your hands up and out of the sand because the last thing that is on your body will be marked so when his sunglasses fell, they were the thing that was marked even though he still had maybe two or 3 feet ahead

Former field event official here. The measurement would be from the mark closest to the toe board. Therefore it will be measured from the sunglasses since they make an indention in the sand no matter how slight. These are current HS, NCAA, USATF & Olympic rules. They haven't changed as of this olympiad year.

Competitors are aware of these rules as we are required to go over them before the beginning of that day's competition, the beginning of each flight and beginning of finals. Any items on your body when you come down that runway are considered part of you and your uniform...wigs, sunglasses, shoes, spikes, hats, dentures, etc. If it lands behind the athlete, that's where the mark is measured from. If they land in front of the athlete, the mark is measured from the nearest mark to the toe board. No matter how dumb, stupid, antiquated, etc some of you think the rule is, it's still the rule.

Most athletes secure or remove articles that are prone to coming off due to the impact their bodies make with the sand at such high speeds (think physics). He knew when he turned around that he had just ruined a great jump. He doesn't get to jump over or protest the decision. Hopefully he jumps better on his next attempt 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

As a pair of sunglasses I can tell you it should be measured from the sunglasses

For those who don’t understand why he’s not getting it is because, in long jump and triple jump the closest mark of sand is where you get measured for, also even if you already jumped you always have to walk foward because if you walk back on the sand wherever your last step was is where you get measured from.

I thought they were just really nice sunglasses. That’s what I’d be like.
