Neutral Tones by Thomas Hardy

We stood by a pond that winter day,
And the sun was white, as though chidden of God,
And a few leaves lay on the starving sod;
– They had fallen from an ash, and were gray.

Your eyes on me were as eyes that rove
Over tedious riddles of years ago;
And some words played between us to and fro
On which lost the more by our love.

The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing
Alive enough to have strength to die;
And a grin of bitterness swept thereby
Like an ominous bird a-wing….

Since then, keen lessons that love deceives,
And wrings with wrong, have shaped to me
Your face, and the God curst sun, and a tree,
And a pond edged with grayish leaves.

This was the first poem I purposely read out loud. Thomas Hardy was a favourite of a resident of mine. I never read poetry out loud before. I was an activity assistant. I really enjoyed it. 🙏🏻

You know always how to connect things, thoughts, impressions in a meaningful manner. So different elements that have their own history to it join into a “Gesamtkunstwerk” and by mutual fertilisation create something new. It’s now to me to connect my own self to the offered feast. I think you make us a great service. Your art is honest and it is beautiful. What more could I ask for from your side. The one I have to challenge is myself: to bring the time, the openness the honesty to your art and allow the deep dialogue to happen. Thank you for your effort, thank you for the nourishing fruit you allow to grow.
