I really loved this movie, and it’s messaging. It was marketed so terribly (I’m guessing also because of its “radical” message) so it’s unfortunate it never got as many eyes on it as it should have, much like an Atlantis or a Treasure Planet, but it packed a punch for kids movie.

For what it’s worth, I thought the movie was cute and absolutely gorgeous in some scenes.
Some might make the argument that since Searcher (the farmer dad) is a farmer, he should understand having to live as one with nature, but if you look out over his fields he’s monocropping, or only growing one type of crop, which is an insanely expensive, less practical, and higher risk type of farming when compared to other systems like crop rotation. For example, the severe monocropping of the potato caused the Potato Famine in Ireland back in the 1800’s. But at the end of the movie we see that Searcher has embraced more diversity in his fields and I thought this was such a nice, subtle touch for the movie!

I don’t want to sound like a part of the problem, but there is a theory floating around that Ethan is home-brewing rules to this game, the text on the demon spider literally refers to “fighting” it. Nobody wants the peaceful version of Primal Outpost to exist more than me though.

I love this game concept, reminds me of one of my favorite board games, where you play as island spirits and need to work together to kick out the colonialists. Awesome video btw, it's a shame this movie flew under the radar as much as it did.

Whilst going about it in a pretty messy way, I still really appreciate the environmental message the film went for. I just wish they had actually explored alternatives to the unsustainable energy source they once used (the Pando).

It’s easy to complain about non renewable energy sources, but it’s hard to actually present solutions. Their whole society had to have gone through extremely radical changes (especially in such short notice) - and I wish we could’ve seen how they actually went on about it. We saw their new agriculture and them cleaning up the insides of the giant creature - but what about the ships? How are they still working without Pando? Did they find a new, renewable source of energy? I wish they had foreshadowed that throughout the film and explored that in the end.

As it is, this is, to me, an okay film with huge untapped potential. The worldbuilding is genuinely fascinating - I just wish the story they told around it was a bit better and more tightly woven. The characters were also good - but they could’ve been utilized much better as well.
