I never knew such a thing existed. When I saw the video title, I thought you were talking about the plain old-fashioned inkwell for a dip pen.
Interesting side note, I’m not quite old enough to have used a dip pen in school, but when I started school in the mid 60s our wooden desks still had a hole for an inkwell.

I’m still viewing this video. But my immediate response to the question in the title is that an inkwell is an opening or receptacle to rest a bottle of ink that’s intended for refilling a fountain pen. My introduction to fountain pens and inkwells was in primary school, back in the mid-‘50s. The inkwell was a hole in the top of the student desk, where I could place an ink bottle. To fill my pen, I would release a lever on the barrel that drew ink from the bottle into the pen. I’m so glad I found your channel and website. And I’m fascinated with the innovations of this instrument, as well as the ink colors now available. I’m looking forward to starting my pen collection, and will be placing an order soon. 😊

and the Caran d'ache chromatics bottle which tilted for easier access, and really interesting looking.

Inkwells are basically companions to other desk accessories like desk pens/pen stands and things. I would not mind an inkwell, but I vary my inks so often it would not be functionally much use to me, and decorative I would just use some of my more attractive bottles.

Incredible articulation and knowledge on Drew’s presentation!

The ink miser looks like a great addition to getting all the ink out of a bottle.

Love the Pineider travel inkwell. That plus a bulb syringe, a fine blunt syringe an a cocktail prep-glass covers all my filling and cleaning needs across cartridges that I re-use and refill, converteres, piston fillers, vac fillers, etc. Great suggestion and keep up the cool videos!

I just purchased my TWSBI Diamond 50 Inkwell (I am loving the features) to pair with my Diamond 580 Iris. They make a beautiful set! Thank you!

I have a Visconti Traveling Ink Pot, purchased in the 1990s that I use to fill all of my pens. I don't travel with it, but you get a really full fill and the grip doesn't get ink all over it. Great video.

I just love these pencasts so much. What an inspiration for an artist to use and learn from. Thank you @The Goulet Pen Company. (Yes, everyone).

I got to say I started out back when "Scrips" ink came in a glass bottle with a built in pocket to hold ink up for easier filling.
So believe me when I tell you the TWSBI Diamond 50 Inkwell is the best I have ever used! (I have four of them now) Don't know what took the world so long to come up with it.

Inkwells are essential! TWSBI with TWSBI pens are incredible. Visconti, TWSBI, and Pineider travel inkwells are great. The Pineider is the least of the bunch but still useful. Visconti and Pineider will fit many pens. TWSBI really work only with TWSBI unless you remove the cap.

Ink well
Primary school
There is a hole in the right side of our desks
There was a porcelain ink well that fit into the hole
The teacher would pour ink into the ink well
We would then learn to write copperplate with a dip pen
At the end of the lesson she would pour the ink back into the bottle

This was so informative and now I have to buy some TWSBI inks. And some inkwells, too. Thank you so much for the knowledge!

Rohrer & Klingner have the "Erka Rapid" ink well insert for their ink bottles as well.

And with all this talk of ink well inserts going on, while Drew is waving a 580 ALR in Prussian Blue around, i think an honourable mention should have been given to the Twsbi 580 Filling Pipe. No 580 owner should be without one IMHO. I love it.

The definition of a perfect gift (to me anyway)—Something you would use but would never buy for yourself.

Vintage Sheaffer Skrip bottles have built in ink reservoirs within the bottle. Shake or invert the bottle to fill the reservoir to alleviate the need to immerse the entire grip section into the bottle.
