We're diving into how retail crime has destroyed a city, specifically the once-vibrant Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Witness firsthand the devastating impact of Proposition 47 on local businesses, where crime runs rampant and stores are left vacant. This was once a bustling hub of international tourists and lively commerce, but now? It's a ghost town filled with nothing but "For Lease" signs. #retailcrime #santamonica #businessclosure #iallegedly #CaliforniaCrimeRates #ShoppingDistrictDecline #CityDecline #UrbanDecay

As a former business owner: Rents are too high, consumers' credit is maxed-out, and too many bums.

The cities are being destroyed nationwide. It isn't just one area or one city. I believe this is intentional,

Permit me to describe the evolution of the Third Street Promenade.
1. I was there with my infant son on the day it was opened with a parade. Just for fun, we marched ahead of the mayor.
2. You see the outside dining? Originally, the lessees in the buildings with the ground floor restaurants constructed outdoor dining and paid nothing for it. The city owns the area where the outdoor dining is. I lost track of the charges when they reached $1200 a month, with the city charging for the city owned space.
3. The area did not go to hell because of shoplifting. It went to hell because of the political shutdown of the businesses. I went there during the Wuhan flu close down. No one was there shoplifting. The stores were closed because the government shut them down.
In Jun 2022, the governor made the political announcement that Covid 19 was over. The mom and pop stores did not come back. The franchise operations and company owned stores would have been crazy to come back because there was no foot traffic.
4. The parking charges also went up. I would take a baby stroller and do three hours free parking on Saturday or Sunday.
5. Prices went up as the area went upscale. The middle class was ignored. The mom and pop restaurants and stores moved out. The mall at the end was closed for years and re-opened. Great if you were making $200, 000 or $300, 000 a year.
6. At one time, I was an officer of a Santa Monica Hotel. Forget the prices when I was associated. The current price for a one night stay is $550 plus tax. Every hotel went upscale. That hotel is at the end of the 3rd Street Promenade.

How you want to spend your money is up to you. I received a flier yesterday. A large pizza was $38!! Supposedly a discount. I went to Ralphs. I drove my excellent 20 year old car, bought a vegetable pizza for $6 for breakfast. It would have taken me the same mileage cost to go to the restaurant.

Thank you, Dan. This is such a tragedy. When I lived in SoCal, Santa Monica was highly desirable. Then, came rent controls

I am so sad at how our beautiful country is going down the drain 😢

Thank you for covering all this. As long as the decision-makers do not feel the pain they cause everyone else, the trajectory continues.

California was the most beautiful, safe, and welcoming city I've ever visited. I visited there in the early 70's. Thank Goodness for memories 😃 😊

Nice tour of the progress taking place in the People's Republic of Santa Monica. Glad I left California in 2013 and never returned.

I live in the Midwest. I've been to California a few times on business trips, but I would NEVER LIVE THERE. The people running the state are INSANE, and the voters are CLUELESS. R.I.P. California.

Recent new adults in society probably think that this is normal.

Venezuela was a rich country with shopping malls a few decades ago. We are on the same path.

This is nothing compared to San Francisco and Oakland. Wanna see a true Mad Max apocalyptic hellscape? Go there instead.

I don't bother watching when you have Bob on. Divested out of the stock market a long time age. Sleep very good at night. Also, grew up in SoCal in the 50s and 60s, what a fantastic place. Now live in NWMo and love it. Enjoy your information and your tours. Thank you so much.

Third Street is more than dead. 4 years ago, (gee, I wonder who was the leader back then) you could go to that same area and it would be packed full of tourists, and open shops. To avoid this, people go to Ocean Blvd. However, people have to realize Santa Monica has the 2nd largest encampment outside of Skid Row. This is what happens when you pet the Donkeys.

I had a retail job a year ago. We were told to watch the people who were stealing. Watch them walk out the door. Customers were shocked to see it happen.

I was there in the late 1970's playing acoustic guitar on the beach. Between all the beautiful girls and weather, I thought I was in Heaven coming from Brooklyn, N.Y. .What a shame. Glad I moved out of New York too.
