Create a Queen's Gambit Christmas Pinafore Dress for Cheap

I may not go to a lot of holiday parties, but when I do, I want to look like a 1960's chess champion...but covered in Christmas trees. Thanks to Mood Fabrics for the FREE PATTERN based on this historical style, this was a quick diy from a thrifted tablecloth. Who doesn't like a good upcycle sewing project?!

Let's sew a really cool, versatile dress that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

How to sew a pinafore dress? Just watch me and do not what I do...

I still say that out are a very brave sewer. You just forged ahead with that side zipper. Keep on sewing.!!!

It looks fantastic! To date, my sewing experience is hemming, mending and making a shower curtain, lol. I hope to sew some of my clothes one day, but it's always seemed so intimidating. I love your approach and how you use thrifted fabrics. I may finally get out of my own way and sew something.

Look at you go! That was immensely professional, you made it look simple, I very relate to not sticking to the one item in sewing stores, can’t believe how the zip went in and it looks gorgeous on you it’s a great colour xx

I am literally in the middle of sewing 2 different dresses from Christmas plaid tablecloths!!! You're video is so timely that way. My tablecloths are a 65% cotton 35% poly blend, but they are woven to look/feel like a loose weave linen, and the relatively open weave and fraying are killing me! The dress I'm working on now I'm sewing with just enough ease to avoid a zip because plaids mixed with zips are pure evil. Long live tablecloth dresses! Love this video, well done!!!!

Can you show how you put in a zipper? I always have a hard time. I just made a dress. I attached the bodice to skirt sewed up the seams then attached zipper to side. When I opened the seams it was just all a mess. What is the easiest way?

I have been sitting on this pattern for months…good to know that it tends a bit bigger. This came out so rad! Would look awesome with like a black turtleneck underneath too. Does the pattern have the side zip in it? Or was that your own decision? I’d love to make this - not sure I’m gonna do the circle skirt though because I can never find fabric wide enough for the skirt to be long enough for me…unless I also used a tablecloth I guess? Or a blanket? I’ll have to give this some thought.

Thanks for sharing this, it’s a great pattern and the pinafore turned out so cute!

This turned out really well. I am wondering what wearing ease Mood are using in their patterns. I had been looking at this one and thinking about making it with some wool I had bought for a victorian walking skirt, on which I have now changed my mind about making. And thank you ever so much for sharing your hat, it is the laugh I needed today.

Nice!
Hemming circle skirts is a bit tricky. I wonder about doing a rolled hem…
