In this video, I go through the recent controversial changes to the UK Foundation Programme application, how this will impact you as a medical student (or aspiring one), and my personal thoughts and advice. I also share my personal experience.

The new changes are good because they de-incentivise the points-based system and create a more equal platform. However, I think they've announced it with far too little time for students to prepare. Let me know what you think!

A bit about myself:
Hey guys! I'm Matt, a junior doctor 👨‍⚕️from Hong Kong working in London in the UK. I made this channel to share my thoughts, experiences and emotions in my journey working as a doctor, particularly during these difficult times of Covid-19. I hope to share with you all the realities of medicine in all its honesty and empower conversations, while hopefully bringing you some entertainment and making you smile.

I'd love to hear from you:

It’s a kick in the face that they announced it in the middle of this academic year, via Twitter too. Before speaking to med schools or other organisations. I’m currently intercalating, and they told us mid-year that these are the changes. Those possible 5 points are no longer possible. Me and my friends took the year out to study something we enjoy and for a break really, but a lot of students have intercalated for points or a publication. Felt quite unfair

I did think intercalated degrees carrying so many points was wrong. Esp because it's really only 1 year, not a full degree course. I found it frustrating, 1 yr versus a full 3-4 yr course had same points. And the issues of equality is important re intercalation. BUT why not still include prior full degrees? These students are likely older, potentially more mature and have additional relevant experience.

Totally agree re the timing of the changes, and bringing in so ppl can make plans. HEE unfortunately does this, it's doing it to remaining LTFT CMT doctors currently too.

Very informative, Matt! I wasn't aware of the changes and I don't study in the UK but it's good to know about anything new that arises. Would be interesting if you make a dedicated video about the healthcare technologies and what else you plan on doing in your FY3.

Thank you for making this video! I am in second year and I was thinking of intercalating to boost my FP application but since I am an international student too I dont want to put extra financial burden on my family. I definitely agree that the new change is fair but i think they should make the change starting from 2024 :P

Hey can you make a video for international medical graduates who are willing to join in foundation year programme ? It would be really helpful. Thank you.

Hi! After the changes, How do you know that the medical school decile ranking is changed to 50? From the UKFP website, they have announced that they are still looking how to rearrange the total score, with the possibility of SJT having more weightage (>50), since that actually shows the potential of the foundation doctor.

Hi there, is it possible to apply for an intercalated degree but say if you were unsuccessful, to then carry on with the rest of ur medical degree instead? Or would you have to take a year out?

Hi Thank you so much for the very informative video.
I have post-graduate masters in surgical science and practice. It is not an intercalating degree as the minimum application requirements is a full MBBS.
Do you think with this change it will discount my masters?
