What we saw on Venus | COSMOS in a minute #34

The surface of Venus is so hot that the longest a lander survived on it is just 128 minutes. It was Soviet Union’s Venera 13 mission. However, in those little over two hours, the lander unveiled the reality of Venus that shocked astronomers. It captured and transmitted images of Venus' rugged and unforgiving landscape while gathering crucial data on the atmosphere's temperature, pressure, and composition. Notably, Venera 13 made history by recording and transmitting the actual sounds of another planet, including the eerie sounds of Venus' wind. The lander also revealed that Venus has a surface temperature of 460°C or 860°F, hot enough to melt lead. Additionally, the lander recorded a surface air pressure approximately 90 times higher than that of Earth. Venera 13 remains the longest-surviving lander on Venus, and its data continues to be studied by scientists today.

Venus: Hot as hell.
Mars: Cold and tiny.
Earth: Just right.

What's amazing is that they did Venera 13 (& 14) in 1981.

It's funny that USA to this day claims it won the "Space race"
when Russia did multiple more achievements such as first satellite, first animal in space, first photograph in far side of the moon, first man in space, first woman, first space walk, first spacecraft landing on the moon, first spacecraft landing on another planet venus, first space station, first spacecraft landing on mars.

We have no idea how rare and fortunate we are to be.

The soviets were some damn good engineers

Huge respect to the Soviet Engineers that took this task on. A hugely difficult task and for the time absolutely ground braking.

Good thing the lander wasn’t made with lead.

Edit: hate to be that guy, BUT 1.8K LIKES

Edit: we are now second to top comment. Change that now and I’ll will give you a cookie

Soviets were incredible engineers they were able to do this in early 80s, most of the nations even now are nowhere near it.
If the soviet union hasn't politically failed world would have seen many more marvelous feats of engineering.

Bravo to the Soviet scientists for this spectacular episode.👍

It’s a good idea always to specify which of these images is of actual Venus surface and which one’s are CGI

This is why despite current events (stupid military mistake), I still respect and admire Russia's people.

The national anthem of venus should be:
"The Revenge of Vera Gemini" by Blue Oyster Cult

It's not only hot, it's also acidic.
